Baseado num livro de Jack Ketchum, este filme é contado da perspectiva do jovem David Moran e segue o destino das irmãs Meg e Susan Loughlin, que se tornam suas vizinhas nos anos 50. Após um acidente que vitimou os seus pais, as duas irmãs ficam ao cuidado da tia, Ruth Chandler, que vive sozinha com os seus três filhos após o abandono do pai. A alcoólica e instável Ruth cedo começa a maltratar as irmãs com a cumplicidade dos filhos e perante a impotência de David.
